Kiki Smith

I spent much of my adolescence, and some of my adult life in Milwaukee Wisconsin.  One of the things I like most about Milwaukee is it's art museum.  This is a painting of a self portrait of Kiki Smith that she'd made out of beeswax.  It was so delicate that she would melt if the lighting and air temperature changed slightly.  I chose to paint a picture of this sculpture because it was a portrayal of a naked woman who was truly naked and not nude.  The medium (beeswax) reflects the vulnerability of Kiki Smith as a naked being - and this is very different from the way most nudes are portrayed.

Side note:  Upon entering the museum one day, I noticed a group of police officers wandering around the gallery.  Apparently someone had turned Kiki so that she was mooning the entire room.
